I know, I've been gone for a minute but I needed that break, yeah I did. I had not been inspired by many things for a while. I don't know what it was but I couldn't really write or think about much, I guess I just really needed time to put my own life into focus and figure out some things. I had been going through some tough times and I was drained from being an emotional mess, yup. But I got my swag back, church. Anyways, let me tell you all about the things I have been working on. In the past few weeks I have been designing and creating great pieces of jewelry and accessories. I am starting my own line with a collection due out soon, probably by late January. In preparation of the unveiling of the Spring 2012 collection I will be setting up a new blog that will have more frequent post about DIY projects and fashion related topics. I will continue writing my personal post on this blog, Black Anesthesia, but if you'd like to learn more about my upcoming collection please stay tuned. In the next coming weeks I will be revealing the name of both my line and Spring 2012 line, as well as some sneak peeks of some pieces. Well that is all. I haven't been able to write lately because my life is basically uninspiring right now. I wanted to write about Troy Davis, the Iranian prisoners being set free, the Occupy Wall Street protest, President Obama's new jobs plan; there is so much to talk about and I have opinions on it all but I just haven't felt like pulling together together thoughtful sentences lately. I can't really put my finger on my mood but I know it has been miserable lately and for a number of reasons I won't get into. I am starting a new series soon, I am researching now but until then. It was such a lovely day to stay indoors and sleep. It rained like cats and dogs here in Providence, the kind of rain that is relentless. As I tried to find a coat to venture out in, I couldn't find any jacket or coat in my closet that made me want to even get dressed. I threw on a cardigan and vowed to find a few new, potential outerwear pieces. Some trends for Fall 2011's outerwear include fur, color and capes! Yes capes, I'm in love! A store that has so many great outerwear options for plus size women is Nordstrom. They have options from leather bomber to colored trenches and capes. They're more than likely going to be the place where I'll be buying my coat from. Let me show you all some of the fun pieces I found while searching the web. Come shopping with me!

Fall is hands down my favorite season and with Labor Day behind us, the unofficial start of the season is officially upon us. Fall's my favorite because of its deep, rich colors that incorporates itself in every aspect of our lives. From the beautiful orange sunsets and leaves turning deep red on the trees to apple picking and sweater wearing; fall is by far my most fashion friendly season. I get so inspired by the elements around me and the warm days and cool nights. I just love it all! Here are some of the things that are inspiring me for this season. Let me know what inspires you and your fall wardrobe.

Velvet is giving me so much life this season. The texture and softness are amazing against your skin. This velvet dress is from Asos Curve and is currently on sale. Throw on a leather bomber, a pair of tights, a fun clutch and some chic booties and you're set to start your day.

Detailed oriented booties are all the rage this season. From bold prints to sequins, booties should be a staple in your closet and can easily spice up an ordinary look.

I saw these polishes in the August issue of In Style magazine and went absolutely crazy. As a woman of color, trying to find a true nude polish is difficult, these colors make it a lot easier. I ordered two last week, I can't wait for them to get in.

This season is all about buckles, furs and different textures when it comes to handbags. I love this particular handbag from Aldo because of it's size, color and handles. Plus it is 100% on trend and completely affordable.

Urban Decay is by far my favorite cosmetics line. The pay out with all of their products are amazing. This is their Book of Shadows IV palette and it has almost every color you need to achieve a great fall makeup look, almost.

Bold colored sheath dresses are great to add a pop to your fall wardrobe. Layer it with a cardigan or blazer with some of your favorite accessories and it is perfect for the office.

Cardigans, especially boyfriend cardigans, are my go to outerwear in the fall. Layer them on or cinch them at the waist, cardigans are an easy way to look polished.

Y'all know I need a new wig for the fall! Totally loving this cut, color and swag of this unit from Pink Lace Wigs.

A faux fur vest can instantly make any outfit edgier.

WTF Torrid!

Sometimes I want to call the creative director or whoever is in charge of designing pieces for Torrid and bop them in the head. The dress above may possibly be one of the ugliest dresses I have ever seen, let alone for plus sizes. It is the Grey Sparkle Body Con One Shoulder Dress and is listed for $68.50. A mix of polyester and spandex with ruching, ruffles and a fluttering one shoulder sleeve; this dress was designed in poor taste and without the actual thought of how the dress would look on Torrid's designated target audience. The horrid detailing and cinching at the waist draws unflattering attention to the midsection, an area in which most plus size women would like draw attention away from. This dress is atrocious, Torrid needs to go back to the drawing board with this design. Period.

Eloquii by The Limited

I love Gabi Gregg, former MTV Twitter Jockey and blogger of GabiFresh.com, so when I heard via Twitter that she partnered with The Limited for a plus size line, I was uber excited. Eloquii will be available in October and will range from sizes 14-24. There aren't any pictures circulating the web yet of the line but I have full faith that Gabi made sure the pieces are fabulous. I am patiently waiting for its debut, hopefully it will be another fashionable and on trend plus size clothing line to choose from.

My friends and I always rate our summers and since we've started Summer 2007 has easily crushed every other summer when it comes to fun, ridiculousness, drama and foolishness. Summer 07, as we fondly call it, was basically the summer of transitioning from childhood to adulthood for most of us. We were all in the awkward stage of being responsible adults while still exploring different scenarios for our lives. Well if Summer 07 was the summer of finding one's self than Summer 2011 was the summer of securing and unapologetically declaring our adulthood to the world. Summer 2011 was a season of being grown and sexy, not doing but being the total embodiment of the phrase. Weekends in NYC, Miami, Boston; brunches and dinner on the Hill and Wickenden; humid nights at clubs and lounges; kickbacks in apartments and condos; yeah we've come a long way. This summer was stressful, uplifting, invigorating, full of love, dreadful and as always fun.

This summer has been a complete whirlwind; fast, emotional, fun, ridiculous, all types of adjectives. But one of the highlights of this summer was my trip to Miami. It was a hot, sexy, fun, sweaty, drunkard mess; to say the least. I met people from all over the world while vacationing down there and I met some interesting men there too. I caught myself side eyeing one too many crazy looking females and wearing my "Up North" attitude on my sleeve like a badge. It was amazing. The drinks are watered down and the prices are obnoxious but I wouldn't change anything. Oh and did I say the drink specials are ridiculous, buy one and get one free; ummmm yes please and keep those drinks coming. The hundreds I spent were well worth the experiences I had!

Why You Laughing Out Loud? I'm Serious!

I am a planner. I try not to be but with my schedule and lifestyle it really is hard for me to be spontaneous. So I just don't understand why people think it is funny that I have my wedding planned out already. Seriously, I have my whole wedding planned out to the last detail, only thing is missing is my groom. I have this kid that I have talked to on and off for like ever now and he is honestly one of the closet things to perfection. The thing that stops me from seriously getting into a relationship with this kid is his job. He's a military man. A few weeks ago I went into Kay Jewelers to pick up some charms for my mom and I saw my ideal wedding ring. It is pink and big! I instantly loved it. So I sent him a picture of it, naturally, and his response was "LOL"! I died too but I was dead ass serious. I am like dying to just settle down, I am so over being single and/or dating around. It's so much work! You have to meet the person, get to know them, figure out if you like them, date a little, get to know their flaws and all and then, more than likely, ditch them because of their/your flaws. Then add in Facebook, Twitter, insert random social media tool here, and it is like a freaking roller coaster ride of emotions with the occasional sexually encounter. I. CAN. NOT. EVEN. DEAL. PERIOD. I really am just so over it, I am. I'll be 24 in two weeks and though I am enjoying my youth, my youth is quickly coming to an end. I mean I just kind of want to get married and have a kid and live the American Dream AND get my PhD by time I turn 30, my biological clock is ticking! I don't want to be 30+ having my first child; I've started my career and I'm on course with my life goals but damn, I don't want to be like 42 with a 4 year old. Nope, I can not. I want to be like 42 with a 15 and 12 year old. Whatever this is just THE MOST random rant ever and I am done.

Good News: Hard Work Really Does Eventually Pay Off!

They say hard work pays off and I am starting to believe it. Rhode Island is basically in financial turmoil and with our state budget released last week Rhode Islanders learned how dire our situation really is. One measure of balancing the budget was through cutting Medicaid which is vital to many seniors and nursing homes. When my union and other community groups heard of this, we immediately sprung into action. People wrote letters to our elected officials, made phone calls to the State House, door knocked to raise awareness of the issue amongst our neighbors and wrote letters to editors; all of these actions were heard. In the proposed budget for the Fiscal Year 2012 Medicaid has not been cut and our seniors in Rhode Island have prevailed. Sometimes the good guys do win.

I love getting dressed up and figuring out what I am going to do with my makeup. I feel like you can transform yourself with the right attire and the most perfect, flawless face but getting to that point can sometimes be a challenge. In the past few months, I have studied the art of applying makeup and tying my whole look together. It has taken some practice, many hits and misses, but all along the way it has been fun and an adventurous journey. Right now I am trying to master applying fake eyelashes; they're so hard to get used to applying but so worth all the effort when you see the finished result. Makeup is so much fun. Nothing makes me happier than having a shopping day at Sephora or when there is a makeup event at my local MAC counter.

I've been wanting to show you all how I apply my makeup for a while now so when I was asked by a friend to show her a summer look, I thought why not show you all at the same time. Below I demonstrate to you all how to achieve a bronzy, summer look. I use a variety of products from both high and low end lines. Color Block That Shit Like A Lady

Color Blocking is a trend this season my friends and I have fallen in love with. It's fun, versatile and so easy but because of all those great qualities, everyone is color blocking everything. Brights, stripes, flowers, lace; it's all being mixed and matched with all the colors of the rainbow. One way of color blocking I haven't tried is matching soft, lady-like pastels with bright neons. The contrast of a feminine color and electric neon with nude pumps seems so sexy. I pulled together a look that I think would have Kim Kardashian's stylist wishing they would have thought of it first. (They probably have already lol) Why don't you go try it out?

The Rhode Island General Assembly is currently considering slashing state Medicaid funding to nursing homes by $6.1 million. This would undermine the quality and continuity of care many elderly nursing home residents receive - and cause nursing homes to cut staffing levels, pay and benefits, or potentially even close. For the past three years, Medicaid funding that benefits the elderly in nursing homes has been cut - and we simply cannot afford another deep cut to Medicaid. The people of Rhode Island agree. In a recent poll, 94% of all Rhode Islanders opposed cuts to Medicaid funding for seniors.

Between the city laying off police officers, police brutality and his own "pension issues", Esserman is already on very thin ice with the City Council. Actually many of the council members have been looking for his resignation for some time now. It's about that time we start looking for a replacement.

Sweet Lady

I wish I had taken a full body picture of this outfit but I couldn't get it myself at a good angle. It's just a nude, one shoulder dress from Asos and a black corset from Torrid. But I wanted to post this photo because I loved my makeup. I was going out to a club in Boston and was going for a glowy, golden look. I did my regular routine with my concealers and foundation from MAC, I think I am going to post my face routine soon, but instead of just using blush I used bronzer and a highlighter. I am a NC 42 in the Pro Long Wear. I used my e.l.f. Studio Contouring Blush and Bronzing powder and my Smashbox Baked Fusion Soft Lights highlighter. I contoured with the bronzer side of my e.l.f. set and applied the highlighter to the highest points of my cheek, basically right above the hallows of my cheek. I also dabbed a little bit of the highlighter onto my cupid's bow. I kept my eye shadows simple with a wash of a shimmery champagne color, from one of my Sephora palettes, all over my lid and a metallic copper, from Rimmel London, in my crease and lower lash line. Finally I used NYX's earthy shimmer in the inner tear ducks and as an eyebrow highlighter. Of course I ran my blackest, black eyeliner on my top and lower lash lines with a few swipes of my favorite mascara, DiorShow. My lipstick is actually my friend's concealer with a peach gloss over top. This look was so easy to achieve but captivated everyone because of how shimmery it was. I looked like a bronzy, golden goddess when the club lights hit my face, it glowed. This is definitely one of my go to makeup looks for the summer.

Blue Me Away!

I stopped going to the nail salon once I really figured out how much money I was spending there every single month. I was really spending at least $100 a month on my nails and toes. So I basically learned to do my own nails and to save that money. People always ask me where I get my nails done at and when I say that I do them myself, they don't believe me. PEOPLE, I DO MY OWN NAILS! I do them while I work overnight because I basically don't have anything else to do. (Also why I blog so much at night.) Below is a step by step picture tutorial on how to achieve the sparkly blue nails I am rocking today. Enjoy!!!

Clip and file your nails into your desired shape.

Add the two coats of Blue Me Away!

Layer on 2 coats of the sparkly, glitter polish. Finish off with a generous coating of the clear top coat.

Crossroads.

I'm at the crossroads of northwestern Providence. I see people driving their cars watching me as I watch them. It's about 3pm on a Monday and the roads are about to combust with rush hour traffic. I'm at the crossroads of northwestern Providence. I look to my left and I see our State Capital, I look to my right and I see poverty and despair. I'm at the crossroads of northwestern Providence. I observe my scenery; I see Downtown's Financial District. I see a neon blue house on Federal Hill, I smile because it's one of my favorite restaurants. The wind blows a cool breeze down my back, it tickles. I'm at the crossroads of northwestern Providence. I steer at the State House and envision my future. The clouds suddenly break and now the sun is shining in my eyes, I steer at the State House and envision the future of RI. I'm at the crossroads of northwestern Providence. My mechanic yells that he's done with my car but I continue to steer into the distance thinking what potential my city has; our culture runs deep and diversity is at it's core. He yells again for me to come to him. I turn to listen to what he has to say about my car but all I hear are my most inner, personal thoughts. I stand at the crossroads of northwestern Providence but instead it feels like the crossroads of my world.

I have a Windows 7 phone and this special smart phone allows me to see all of my Facebook albums. Isn't that fun?!? I was going through the albums and rediscovered my photos of the time, then Senator, Obama came into town for a campaign rally. It was his first visit to Rhode Island but his campaign had been working hard here and I was one of the many young adults volunteering for the candidate promoting "Change". I look back to that period in my life, between school and work and volunteering, I think it really helped shape me into the social justice chasing person I am today. I may not agree with or understand President Obama but I believed in Senator Obama's message of Hope and Change. I am grateful for the lessons and experiences I had while helping his campaign here in Rhode Island. When I worked on campaigns in the 2010 election cycle, I was able to use some of the knowledge of selling a candidate when talking to voters because of what I learned on Obama's 2008 campaign. Canvassing and phone banking weren't as painful as I remembered them to be and using voter databases were a breeze because I was somewhat familiar with them. Working on President Obama's presidential campaign set a base for me as I discovered my own dreams and aspirations of a more perfect union.

Have you ever met someone with totally opposite opinions to your own but still are fascinated by them? I find that whenever I meet someone with very strong conservative ideas we have the greatest discussions. I recently took a number of surveys, sent to me by a friend, quizzing me on my political ideology. They all said the same thing, VERY LIBERAL. Big fucking surprise, right? Anyways, in the last few weeks I have been meeting younger members of the Tea and Republican parties. I never really thought that young people could be conservatives but they are out there. Not only did I not realize that these people exist, I immediately thought that I would be shunned by them or vice versa. Nothing could be further from the truth. I met a former police officer who thought unions and many Democrats were the reason behind America's troubles. Though I wholeheartedly disagree with him, it was nice to calmly discuss issues with someone with an opposing view. I understood his anger with Democrats and his anxiousness about unions. He understood my disgust with Republicans and Wall Street. We understood each other and respected each others views, we may never agree on them but we understood each other. I think that was all I could really ask for.

As an "unconfirmed tornado" ripped through Providence County, Rhode Island so did my "Spanish" lover Andrew aka Andres. My friend Andrew is home from his stay in Panama, with the Peace Corp, for a few days. I decided to plan a group outing for him at a hip burger joint in Downtown Providence called Luxe Burger. We had drinks and bar food, watched the Bruins play and talked for hours about how simple life is in Panama. I remember when he first left for the Peace Corp, I was distraught, scared and excited for him. But I quickly realized, with the wonders of technology, that he is in a beautiful place helping very deserving people. He is having a great time and he now is fluent in Spanish, I'm so proud! Lace fronts wigs are the best thing since sliced bread. No bullshit, they are amazing. And an amazing company that I have fallen in love with recently, because of their luxurious lace fronts, is PinkLaceWigs.com Their units are beautiful, soft, resistant of tangling and affordable. I mean I literally wore the shit out of my wig and it still looks good. I purchased my first synthetic lace front wig from Pink Lace and I could not appreciate the quality of this unit more. The lace is incredibly soft and there is so much parting space to really give the illusion of the hair growing straight from your own head. And I received my wig in like 3 days, if that! Phenomenal company. My hairdresser cut the wig into a style more suitable for my round face and the wig never got tangled or jagged at the ends. I plan on ordering a full lace wig from Pink Lace for my Miami trip, I just can't figure out which one I want.

I'm a month from my 24th birthday and I am college educated, successful, childless and SINGLE. Which causes me to question a few things and you know what, I am going to just be blunt about this whole situation. Are successful Black men afraid of their Black female counterparts? Yup, I'm going there. I can distinctively remember a conversation that I had with 3 of my closet guy friends after a relationship I was in had fizzled out. What they basically told me was that though I've worked extremely hard to be where I am, men may be intimidated by my accomplishments and drive. Wait, what? 'Cuse me, wha chu say? (in a hard Creole accent) Yes I had heard them right, Black men may be intimidated by driven Black women. After a long, enlightening conversation I came to one conclusion; Black men need to MAN THE HELL UP! In today's society where 46% of Black women are receiving college degrees, as 35% of Black men now are college educated, it is a very likely chance that a Black woman will be more accomplished than a Black man. And I am not throwing shade by any means to my Black brothers, because Lawd knows I love me a chocolate brother, but this is a major issue that needs to be discussed within our culture. I truly think it is a sad thing when Black men are exclusively rejecting Black women in fear of not being "man enough" in a relationship. Please don't confuse my words and think I am one of those bitter Black women that hates interracial dating, quite the opposite, I love all types of men. YET I find the attitude towards Black women disturbing and pitiful. What happened to us? And that is an overall question, not just one about dating but in general. What happened to our love for each other, our unity, our solidarity? What happened to Black Love?

A few weeks ago Torrid was having a clearance sale and I picked up three pairs of shoes. The first two pairs, shown below, were priced under $15 each. The nude pumps were regular price at $39.50 but I literally spent $70 for three pairs of sexy shoes! I wanted to get a few new pairs of shoes for Miami and I had been eyeing those nude pumps for a while. When I saw that Torrid was having a 50% off clearance sale, I couldn't resist getting a few other things. The white wedges look amazing on my feet and the nude pumps elongate my legs for miles. As for the royale blue pumps, they're ok but I think I am going to just keep those for my office job. Regardless, three pairs of shoes for $70, can't really go wrong with that!

Have you felt like saying to President Obama "Yo WTF man?!?" Yeah, just like that with the corresponding hand to forehead. I know everyone is still in the after glow of President Obama being able to direct the attack that ultimately sent Osama bin Laden to hell but have y'all paid attention to the economy or unemployment rate or education reports that have been trickling out of DC lately? I just don't understand! (Arms waving in the air as I express my disgust.) What happened to the campaign promises President Obama made while still a presidential hopeful, what happened to the hope and change that he was supposed to implement when he became president and WTF happened to the ending of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? What happened to the courage of one man? What happened to the Obama that was supposed to be looking out for the 95% of Americans that don't make a ridiculous amount of money? WHAT HAPPENED? I know President Obama can not please everyone, and I don't think anyone is asking that, but what I am questioning is his alliance with Big Business. How can you be a leader of the average American when the Koch brothers have you in their pockets? How can you effectively lead when the average American pays more in taxes than General Electric, and the president of that very corporation sits on one of your economic/business growth committees? These are tough questions that need to be answered before the 2012 election. These questions need to be addressed and up for a very candid discussion as our president transitions back into campaign mode. Americans will almost never agree on one specific topic or issue but I think we can all agree that we are in desperate need of a stronger and more secure economy. The economy and job growth will be President Obama's biggest hurdle in his 2012 reelection attempts, just as they were in 2008 only the difference now is that he has been president and as our president he's sort of failing. I still love him and what he represents, I am just so utterly disappointed.

I still have hope, I just hope it's not hope wasted.

Natural Hair Bliss?

One of my New Year's Resolutions was to go natural with my hair and it's been a process. Relaxed hair is basically damaged hair and though it is easier to manage relaxed hair, it is still an overall unhealthy thing to relax your hair. BUT transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair is beyond a bitch. My hair texture is unique, it is just tight spiral curls straight from the root; I can't even comb it unless it is dripping wet. It's crazy period, but I am fighting my urges to relax this hair. A few weeks ago I was in Walgreens picking up some household things when I ventured down the hair product aisle and found a hair care system for all of us former "Relaxers" transitioning into the land of "All Natural". There is a new, but old fashioned, line of natural hair products being exclusively offered at Walgreens called Shea Moisture. I picked up the system for repair and transitioning hair for $20. The kit included shampoo, conditioner, a deep conditioning mask and oil to protect your hair from potential damage from heat. The products are all organic and free of harsh substances like alcohol and sulfur. I've been using the products for about 3 weeks now and I'm kind of on the fence about how I feel about the product. It may be because I have been used to going to the salon weekly and not doing my own hair. (BTW my hairdresser hates that I am not relaxing my hair so I am looking for someone who has better experience with natural and transitioning hair.) Nevertheless, I feel like the shampoo and conditioner leaves my hair rough not soft and manageable. The shampoo does its job in cleaning my hair but that's all and the conditioner doesn't untangle my hair at all, I am literally in the shower still fighting with my hair even with the conditioner penetrating to my roots. AND it leaves my hair dry. It could be the texture of my hair but I am not a fan of this system at all. I think I'll finish using the rest of these products and continue on my search of all natural hair products that are going to give me the results I am looking for. I hope this helps someone out there beginning or thinking about taking their own journey to Natural Hairdom, it is a long process that takes time to get used to.

I know I have said this numerous times and this is a rule I live by. Just because a store doesn't carry your sizes does not mean you can't find a piece in that store that will flatter you and you WILL LOVE it. I basically live in H&M, do they carry my size? Fuck no. But do they make clothing that is still available to me? Yeah. Something that is supposed to be an oversized tank on a smaller woman can definitely look fabulous on me as a normal tank. Get what I am saying? I don't think I can beat this into anyone's head any harder. Just don't count yourself out! Go into stores that don't necessarily carry plus sizes and browse, it won't hurt and you'll probably find something to love.

My New Me or maybe the New Me? IDK...

I took May 25 off of my afternoon job to watch the finale of the Oprah Winfrey Show and it may have been one of the best things I have done in a while. For the couple of days prior to her final show, I had been watching audience members of her final show on the news circuits telling America, and the world, about how intimate Oprah's final afternoon with us was. I was curious to see what they meant, of course you know I haven't known a world without Oprah at 4pm, and I was pretty emotional. Needless to say, Oprah's Love Letter seemed to be directed specifically to me. This past New Year's Eve I had made the resolution to resolve a lot of issues that I have in my life. You see I am one of those people that hold a grudge from being slighted, well not all the time but if you do something major to me I will hold a grudge. And I have been holding a lot of grudges and anger towards people inside of me, Oprah helped me realize that life is too short. Not only did she teach me that life is too short but she also allowed me to see that life is too precious to be wasting on unresolved issues with people I used to love. Well today I started reaching out to old friends and the response has been an overwhelming flood of emotions. People come and go in our lives and I am not trying to change that but what I am trying to change is the outlook I have for life and the outlook people may have for me.

So I just realized I never gave you all an overview of Election day and night 2010. Can I say how absolutely crazy that whole day was? I took the day off from my regular job and focused all my attention on getting my candidates elected. The outcome was that I got my first win on the first campaigned I worked on and every candidate that I worked with through my union was elected. That day is still a blur of door knocking, phone calls and pure anxiety. It was insane, we were out on the streets of Pawtucket from 10am to 8pm urging union members to go out and vote. I had so much fun just interacting with people and giving them a last minute overview of our endorsed candidates. By 8 I was exhausted but so anxious to see how the people of Rhode Island voted and when all the results were finally in I realized all the sleepless days and tired nights at work paid off. The experience I gained and people I met were well worth all of my anxiousness.

Ha! I am listening to Nicki Minaj right now; her song Super Bass is super bad, in a good way. I love music, it is like the ultimate outlet for all of my emotions. And can I please tell y'all how emotional I have been lately? I mean super emo; funny, yes but so annoying. Anyways, I'm here at work bored and thought I should update y'all on my life. So... I have a new job, rather a second job. You all know I graduated last May and I have yet to find a job in my profession. Everyone knows how tough the economy is, especially for recent grads but I can only make the best of my situation. I am volunteering, working with non-profits and sitting on some organizations' E-Boards. It's fun stuff until I can find a job in the political arena or doing PR work for a non-profit. Yeah so my family has a new baby, my little cousin had a baby girl and she is perfection. What else is new? Nothing really; life has been fun, amazing, unbelievable, tiring, stressful but most of all it's been a great teacher. Well that's it for now. I hope you all are wonderful and healthy.

Last night was amazing. Working on campaigns is not easy; it's time consuming with a relentless schedule. But when it all comes together and your candidate(s) win, the none stop madness finally pays off. Primary Day was brutal, I was literally running on no sleep and a 12 hour plus day yet I had enough energy to get out the vote for my candidate, David Bennett, R.N. in Warwick's District 20. By the end of the night, my emotions were running wild and I was beginning to crash but when the results of our victory came in, my night transitioned into pure bliss. Not only did David win but almost every progressive candidate running for office in the state was picked by their constituents to be placed on the ballot in November as their Democratic seat. It was unbelievable. So many upsets for the establishment within the Democratic party in Rhode Island. One of the biggest shake up at the State House in years and more importantly, a more progressive agenda will be in place at the state level and in the city of Providence. November 2nd is only a few weeks away and there is so much more work to be done. A revolution seems to be taking place here in Rhode Island, people are fed up with politics as usual and they are definitely rejecting career politicians. With that said, the fight continues and this was just a sweet win.

Recently I have been really digging Drake's album Thank Me Later, specifically Shut it Down, Lights Up and Unforgettable. Please be advised, I am not telling you who to vote for but please vote Tuesday. With that stated, here is my personal take on one key races to be determined this Tuesday. The Race to Replace Patrick Kennedy; this is the most vital vote for all Rhode Islanders that reside in the First Congressional District. You have four candidates and, honestly, three of these candidates are absolutely the wrong choices for this district. Let me explain, the first congressional district in Rhode Island houses every urban area in Rhode Island minus Cranston. Why does this matter? Understanding the demographics of this district is extremely important because they translate into a number of things: the lack of proper schools in this area and the lack of proper funding to these cities and towns basically forcing them to delve out major cuts to municipal services and social programs. Additionally, the lack of funding is ultimately balanced by increases in taxes thus balancing a faulty budget on the backs of the working people of this district. We need a Congressman that will fight for the working people of Rhode Island's First Congressional District. I truly believe David Segal is the best candidate for the job and this district.

Here in Providence, we have given David Cicilline a number of years and chances to revitalize our school system. If it is not evident by now my top issue in any race for any office is education and the economy, but education is my primary concern. The statistics for Providence Public Schools are horrendous, to say the least, and the data on minority students is cringe worthy. With a population of around 175,000 people and half of those individuals are minorities, it is unacceptable to see that of the 9586 minority students, 540 of those students dropped out of school. You may not think that is a substantial amount of students but when you view the test scores for the rest of the minority students in Providence you may think, 'What the hell are they teaching in Providence?!?' Think about it, and Cicilline wants to be my Congressman when he failed me as a mayor.

We also have Anthony Gemma and Bill Lynch vying for this seat. To keep it short and sweet, Bill is apart of the problem that has plagued Rhode Island for decades. Former Chairman of the Democratic Party of RI, Bil Lynch is trying to brand himself as a party outsider when in all actuality everything, well almost everything, Democratic is funneled through that office. Pretty much a huge contradiction in my opinion. As for Anthony Gemma, what could really be said of him? He's a small business owner trying out for the big league with NO experience under his belt. NONE, NOTHING AT ALL! Period, end of opinion.

David Segal is a true champion of the working people. Segal has the experience and track record both on the city and state level that shows he is the best candidate for the job. He has passed laws punishing big banks allowing predatory lending and foreclosures. Last year when Governor Carcieri cut vital aid to social programs and medical facilities, including the facility in which I am employed at, Segal organized fellow legislators to block the state budget until $25 million in funding was successfully restored. Also a champion for ethics reform and campaign finance reform legislation, Segal has fought hard on the state level to abolish corruption in our states political arena. Segal's co-sponsored marriage equality bills have allowed gay couples in Rhode Island the right to make funeral arrangements for each other and claim their loved ones’ remains. PROGRESSIVE CHAMPION!

This past August was a great month for socializing in RI. Many summer cookouts, parties and concerts; literally one of the best months I've had in a while. I went to the Maroon 5 concert at Mohegan Sun, which was AMAZING. My love for Adam Levine basically sky rocketed that night. Also, a few of my friends left for school and new jobs in different parts of the world, so my friends and I planned a number of surprise parties and I cried numerous times. I was recently hired by my union to organize our members to take political action this election season. I absolutely love the job and it is a great resume builder. Not only that but this job allows me to work with like minded people who are progressive thinkers and community leaders. If that is not enough, I also get to dress in business attire everyday. I LOVE BUSINESS ATTIRE!!!! I think a woman dressed in a great, fashionable piece speaks volumes of her work ethic and personality. During one of my recent online endeavors to build my wardrobe for this position, I received an email from Monif C regarding her upcoming Fall 2010 collection and, babbbbbbbyyyyy, is it utter perfection. Lately I have had this unbelievable confidence that I don't think I have ever had and it is literally exuding from every pore in my body. Its not like I found a new boyfriend or I lost a ton of weight or I some how changed drastically, but there is something about my recent demeanor that is drawing people to me because they are for some reason enthused by me. It is kind of weird even writing about it and up until a few moments ago I could not pin point the source of this good energy. I recently celebrated my 23rd birthday and I promised myself that on the 8th of July, 2010, I would no longer worry about pleasing others or stress over unnecessary drama or just go on in life carrying the world on my shoulders. I realized that I have to live my life for me, so I can be happy and healthy and just overall a better person. And on that 8th day of July, I ushered in a new era in my life where I began working to a more balanced Charon.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Thursday I celebrated my 23rd birthday! It was absolutely amazing. I had the most relaxing and simple morning filled with family, friends and love. I actually planned my own birthday dinner, which is not uncommon for a control freak as myself, but I was surprised that all of my friends showed up. We went to a restaurant named Shark on Providence's Thayer Street and had sushi, it was delicious. Finally, I ended the night with a Corona and grenadine at Lot 401 dancing. It was truly an amazing birthday. BTW my whole outfit is from Target for under $50! Let's talk about bargain shopping, as always I was too last minute to order my original outfit. But I loved the way I looked nevertheless.

This year is turning out to be an eventful one. 2010 is the year of numerous mid-term and gubernatorial elections throughout America; here in Rhode Island the political season is in full effect. Being a political junkie has propelled me into some great situations and many learning environments. Today, while taking a break between my hectic schedule, a friend and I were conversing about what politics really is and why I have such an interest in it? So I looked up the meaning to compare my personal definition to the real one. By definition, politics is the art or science of government or the art or science concerned with guiding or influencing governmental policy or finally, the art or science concerned with winning and holding control over a government. Personally, I believe politics is one thing; politics is a means in a way to effectively help and better your community. Sadly, my definition is not one that is carried along the spectrum of professional or career politicians across America. Honestly, that is the most frustrating thing about American politics. Politicians, as well as other/insider people, involved in the backdoor exchanges and day to day activities seem to conveniently forget that they are elected by the people for the people to help the people and that angers me. They are not elected to sit around and argue across the aisle about insignificant things such as who is a hypocrite or who is the biggest liar; they are elected to implement honest change and promote legislation that will benefit their constituents. Am I naive to believe that our elected officials should have our best interest in mind? Maybe, but I refuse to believe that I have to stand around powerless and mystified nor will I accept this status quo. I am venting but please believe you won't find me stuck on stupid, big things to come!

Little Miss Graduate

May 22, 2010 marked a day in my personal history that was filled with absolute joy, triumph and happiness; I graduated college! I am the first person in my family to attend and graduate an instituion of higher education, so this was really big deal. Rhode Island College graduation ceremonies are held outside on the quad to accommodate all guest and let me tell you, the heat was brutal. Even with the humidity, heat and wearing black from head to toe, I could not have been any happier. Recently I was shopping in Macy's in Providence Place Mall and stumbled upon some pieces by Rachel. At first I thought, "Who the hell is Rachel and why are her clothes not in plus sizes?" Upon actually thinking, I realized she was the former Mrs. Dash and this was her highly anticipated clothing line. Her pieces are magnificent, beautifully designed with a woman's shape in mind. Each item I picked up was reasonably priced and was unique to the point of originality. Tonight I ventured over to her website and was pleasantly surprised to see that many of her dresses and tops are made out of stretch fabrics with intricate draping or oversized. The Washington, DC, Martin Luther King, Jr., National Memorial will honor his life and contributions to the world through non violent social change. Sunday March 21, 2010 marked a huge turn in American Society. The United States of America will now experience the major overhaul and reform of its Health Care system. I am glad to see this happen but sadden by the fact that there is not an public option in this bill that was passed but it is certainly a start. I am also so wonderfully happy that this reform was passed by Barack Obama, the first president that looks like me.

An Ode to NYC

This weekend I had the pleasure of vacationing and relaxing in New York City. It is an absolutely intoxicating place to be, the aura is like this amazing drug. It was a perfect spring weekend with temperatures in the high 60s. I went with my ace boogie Allison of course because she's from NY and who's better than her? No one. Anyways, we got matching Arabic tattoos saying "to empower". We partied in Manhattan and in the Bronx. The Caribbean vibe is so intense in the city, I love it. We didn't shop because we weren't close to a train and I didn't want to leave my car in a random place in the Bronx. Plus the places in the Bronx were not my style at all. But I will be visiting again in the summer and we are definitely planning to stay in Manhattan, so I will be able to shop until I drop at H&M and all the Manhattan shops. OK so its not a secret that I think Alicia Keys is a home wrecker BUT this song that she and Drake have come out with is definitely the business. Its called Unthinkable and she is basically serenading us with her innermost thoughts of asking a guy to become more than friends. It is an intense song for those of us that are lovestruck or stuck on someone because man, oh man, did it get me the thinking. Y'all remember my past post about the fool I am sorta, kinda falling for, well as soon as I heard this song I thought of him. It is so random that I discovered this video today. I'm not one of 50 Cents biggest fans but this song is completely addictive and the video tells a great story to go along with the lyrics. The video showcases 50 on a date with Tamala Jones, a regular actress in the Black acting circuit, and his ex, Vivica A. Fox, abruptly running into them. Vivica looks really good considering both her age and the vast amount of plastic surgery she has add. About a month ago devastation hit the small island of Hispanola, particularly the country of Haiti. Haiti, one of the world's poorest nations, is no stranger to natural disasters and heartaches. This was only a month ago and people seem to have forgotten this tragedy already. Below is the classic We Are The World song written by the late Michael Jackson redone in lieu of the earth quake in Haiti and its 25th anniversary.
